Australia Immigration Update: 13 Key Changes Announced (September 2026)

Australia has made a set of changes to its immigration policies that will impact skilled workers, students, graduates, visitors and people who apply for Working Holiday visas in the next few months. Most of these changes are being introduced in steps. Knowing what is happening can help you get ready, for your Australia visa journey in a way. Here is a full explanation of the 13 changes that were announced in September 2026.

1. Skilled Migration Points System Overhaul

The points system used for skilled migration is being revised, with construction and housing-related skills expected to receive greater recognition. While details are still being released in stages, current points and Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are not immediately affected. Applicants in construction-related occupations should keep an eye on updates as the new points structure is confirmed.

2. Priority Processing for Key Skilled Occupations

Construction, agriculture, fisheries, resources, and teaching are expected to receive higher processing priority under the skilled visa program. This change is being introduced progressively and could significantly benefit applicants in these sectors once the updated priority rules are finalized.

3. Family Restrictions on Student Visas

Australia is planning restrictions, on international students who bring family members with them but some exceptions are expected. Current arrangements will not change away but anyone planning a Student + Dependant application should check the latest rules before making a decision.

4. Family Restrictions for Graduate Visa Holders

Similar restrictions are being planned for family members of Graduate visa holders. Existing arrangements aren't expected to change right away, but new applicants should check the latest requirements before including dependants in their plans.

5. Greater Scrutiny on Student Course Changes

Students who repeatedly change courses — particularly to extend their stay in Australia — will face increased scrutiny going forward. Genuine students pursuing legitimate study plans are not automatically affected, but anyone considering a course change should seek guidance beforehand.

6. Visitor Visas to Include a "No Further Stay" Condition

One of the more notable changes is a new condition being added to visitor visas, preventing holders from using them as a stepping stone to another visa. Current visitor visa holders should review their conditions carefully, and anyone considering a visitor-to-another-visa strategy should seek advice before proceeding.

7. Working Holiday Visa – Year 2 Moving to a Ballot

Year 2 of the Working Holiday visa is expected to shift to a ballot system, though the regional work requirement will remain in place. This means simply completing regional work will no longer guarantee a Year 2 extension — selection through the ballot will also be required.

8. Working Holiday Visa – Year 3 Also Moving to a Ballot

Year 3 of the Working Holiday visa will follow a similar path, moving to a ballot system with a limited number of places available. Applicants currently on a Year 2 visa should set realistic expectations, as Year 3 approval will no longer be guaranteed.

9. Stronger Action Against People Who Stay Past Their Visa Expiry

Australia is doing checking and taking stronger steps against people who stay in the country after their visa ends. This should not affect anyone who's still in the country, with a valid visa.. It is a clear message to make sure you start your next visa application well before your current visa ends.

10. Stricter Rules for Migration Agents

The government is planning stronger action against migration agents who support applications without proper grounds. This reinforces the importance of working with a licensed, ethical immigration consultant who bases every application on genuine information and proper documentation.

11. Crackdown on Non-Genuine Protection Visa Claims

Further measures are being planned to address protection visa claims that aren't genuine. While this requires additional legislation and isn't an immediate change, it signals a broader tightening of Australia's protection visa framework.

12. Greater Control Over Skilled Migration Demand

The Australian government is seeking more control over demand within the skilled migration system, though this also requires further legislation. For now, the current EOI system remains unchanged, and applicants shouldn't assume a new cap is already in effect.

13. Lower Overall Migration Targets

Perhaps the long-term sign is Australias plan to aim for lower total migration numbers in the years ahead. Even though this does not change any application right now it shows that the rules are changing. People applying should think about this when making plans, for the future.

What Should You Do Next?

Many changes are being introduced slowly. Timing and correct guidance are more important than ever. Many of these updates do not affect visa holders immediately but they will determine how new Australia visa applications, especially for skilled migration, student visas and Working Holiday programs are evaluated in the future.

Before making any decisions about your Australia visa application it is important to receive updated advice instead of relying on old information.
